As a Mormon, there is a lot of emphasis placed on having a testimony. As you transition out of Mormonism, you will find that a traditional, Christian testimony is a quite different.
Your Testimony as a Mormon.
A Mormon’s testimony is based on principles that they have learned to be true. They find security in knowing that these principles are true. Yet, all the principles and noise just distract from a real and close encounter with God awaiting them. Mormons are so focused on affirming the right things that they have cluttered up the awareness that there is more to it. There is a God who really wants to know them. He is inviting them into a relationship with Him.
As a Mormon, it is all about working hard to get a testimony. It is something you have to gain. There is a lot of me involved. For instance, there is my desire to be known to have one and my family prompting me to have one. As a Christian though, it is about me surrendering to Him. It is about getting rid of all the noise and allowing Him to come in.
Your Testimony as a Christian.
A Christian’s testimony is not about principles. As a Christian, your testimony is stories about your encounters with God. It is getting to know Jesus and what He is doing in your life. In Mormonism, once you had gained your testimony, you always had it. As a Christian, your testimony is a never ending journey. You will always be in the middle of your story with God. As long as you are walking with God, He will always be teaching you. It is not something you gain, like in Mormonism; it is something you live.
As a Christian, your testimony is not just the experience. It is also expressing this story of your interaction with God. It is telling others about Him coming in at your worst and changing your life. Others need to know so that they can benefit from it.
The Transition from One Testimony to Another.
As you transition out of your Mormon testimony and create your new Christian testimony, it is important to know that you do not have to feel empty after losing everything you had testimony of before. Realize that that is a great space for you to let God fill. You have to trust Him to teach you so that you can walk in step with Him on your journey.
God loves you and wants to change your life. You will have stories to tell about what God has done if you surrender to Him and seek Him.
